Antique Folding Armchair, Maker J. Alderman, London, circa 1870

About the Item

Special mahogany armchair with multiple options. The maker of this chair J. Alderman was known as the maker of inventive furniture for taking on trips and for invalids. This chair is a good example of this. Iron brackets could be hooked to the iron eyes on the side. With handles on the front and back. In this way, the person in the chair could easily be carried, for example a staircase. This is also the reason that the chassis is not attached to the seat. The armrest is also completely foldable, so you can sit comfortably. Very nicely made and completely in original condition. Origin: England Period: Approx. 1870 Alderman was already a well-known chair for disabled chairs, couches and travel furniture when he founded an independent company in 16 Soho Square. Before that, he worked for Thomas Chapman, also a manufacturer of invalid seats, at 6 Denmark Street in Soho. He became Chapman's partner in 1855 and the company changed its name to Chapman and Alderman. In 1890 the company was renamed Alderman, Johnson & Co. and moved to Charing Cross Road and New Oxford Street. In 1903 the company was transferred to John Ward Ltd.
