About the Item
Art deco vintage armchair from walnut and leather designed by Hugo Gorge, circa 1920 in Vienna.
Hugo Gorge was an Austrian architect and a member of the Werkbund.
Especially to mentioned is his work and design for the Austrian Werkbund in Vienna.
Few architects like Josef Frank and Oskar Strnad and Hugo Gorge joined together and had a positive opinion to comfortable and cosy interiors.
Hugo Gorge ( 1883 - 1934 ) was a famed architect and designer in the interwar era.
His designs were featured through its simpleness and clear proportions.
Hugo Gorge was a member of the small circle from designer and architects, who belonged to the
Werkbund. His popular colleagues Adolf Loos and Josef Frank were representative of the Moderne
in Vienna just like him.
He also designed two houses for the Werkbundsiedlung, No. 43 and No. 44 and the interior for the
house No. 43.
Hugo Gorge had a great design field, he designed metal chandeliers for the firm Melzer Neuhart,
fittings for Wiener Werkstätte and ceramics for Wienerberger.
Also Hugo Gorge was taking part at the world exhibition integrated in the Austrian exhibitor team as
art director for the interior firm Lorenz and Reichel and created beautiful furniture pieces.

Armchair handmade of walnut and renewed leather upholstery in brown real leather.
The backrest features a beautiful hand carved decoration while the detailed armrests flow into the backrest.
The feet are angular shaped.
Provenance: private property, Vienna
The condition is very good with minor signs of age and use and so the armchair shows desirable and great patina.
