Chinese Qing Dynasty Rosewood and Marble Armchair, 19th Century

About the Item

A very fine 19th century Chinese Qing dynasty solid rosewood armchair or lounge chair with marble seat. Distinguished by a hand-carved pierced back splat with lively flora & fauna motif that’s topped by a bat, the traditional symbol for longevity, happiness, and good luck. Graceful scroll-like lines define and decorate the entire frame, with delicately carved raised vine details adorning the apron and upper legs. Lower legs are joined by a box stretcher and stand on ball & claw feet, which in Chinese mythology symbolize a dragon guarding the pearl of wisdom or purity from the evil forces wishing to take it. Craftsperson’s hand on handsome display throughout, most notably in the exposed mortise & tenon joinery. Rosewood color has mellowed naturally over the many years to a lovely caramel. Broad seat features its original very heavy inset slab of emperador marble, with dynamic graining and contrast given added interest by golden inclusions that complement the tone of the frame.
