Danish Modern Armchair with Wooden Details, Denmark, 1950s

About the Item

Danish Modern is a term that has become very familiar to design writers, historians, collectors, museum curators, and even consumers. It evolved from the craft traditions of cabinetmaking in Denmark, bolstered by the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibitions from the 1920s onwards, and continues to stay in the focus thanks to the unique pieces such as this armchair. Mid-century Danish designers started taking cues from styles like the Bauhaus and the International Style movement, which explored the idea of function over form — a popular no-nonsense sentiment after the world had gone through a rough patch. This brave new minimalist world was onto something. The furniture from this period is some of the most iconic in the world for a good reason; in this armchair’s case: an uncluttered, uncomplicated design that is as functional as it is timeless. The masterful combination of defined lines and freer forms gives the design its distinctive aesthetic. The more traditional wingback is paired with arms that show constructivist angles and precision. The wood further accentuates these sharp lines and continue in the front to form the tapered legs. The arms flow into the back, creating an attractive profile where the textured upholstery truly stands out. The greenish wool blend pairs very well with the warm colour and smooth surfaces of the wood. The result is an elegant appearance that manages to stay interesting at the same time. The design of this armchair values simplicity in both function and look while also having a striking contrast between shapes and organic materials. It unites the mastery of a cabinetmaker with the unique vision of the designer utilizing traditional materials and techniques. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
