French Louis XVI Painted Antique Fauteuil, Late 18th Century

About the Item

Exquisitely carved and detailed, this fine French open-arm fauteuil was clearly crafted by a fluent and creative hand. The crest rail culminates from the rather varied rail molding in a robust display of flowers carved from the solid rail. Each flower is unique and of individual inspiration, much like the detailed forms carved along the molding. The open arms curve in simple reeded handholds that join the twisting and curling arm support on a pegged tenon. The apron is carved with great vigor, square framed rosettes over the front legs flanking a flow of flowers and twists of ribbon into the central motif of a large flower beneath the twisting flow of ribbons. The legs are carefully turned and tapered with stop-fluting at the lower portion of the leg, each terminating over simple ball feet. We have not had the upholstery under the chair removed to examine for a menuisier's stamp. The surface is old and wonderfully worn, the light pale blue over the cream ground worn through to show the beechwood primary surface beneath. This is not it's first surface, but is quite early with a handsome patina. This very fine chair is an absolute jewel and will certainly be a cherished acquisition by any serious collector of French furnishings of the 18th Century. Measurements: 25" W x 36" H x 21" D, 18" H to seat Condition Report: An old but later painted surface with wear throughout, as expected. Upholstery in "fair" condition with light discolorations and stains throughout. Old cracks along crest rail. Sturdy and strong.
