Gothic Chippendale Mahogany Armchair, England, circa 1770
About the Item
Fine English George III period, circa 1770 carved mahogany armchair in Thomas Chippendale 'Gothick' manner having a serpentine crest-rail carved with acanthus 'ears' and centre foliate motifs surmounting an open-carved back-splat with central cusped lozenge design flanked by shaped stiles. Outward curved arms with flute-and-bead carved knuckle-grips and flared scroll-carved terminals on shaped bellflower carved supports above trapezoidal-form leather upholstered drop-seat on fluted front legs with foliate carved corner brackets. An exceptionally sturdy and exquisite piece with fine patina.
