About the Item

Fine American Federal inlaid mahogany antique lolling chair. Boston, Massachusetts circa 1800. Provenance in the Israel sack collection and in a single collection since 1931 This unusually fine American Federal "Martha Washington" lolling chair is an exceptional specimen from Boston, Massachusetts circa 1790-1800. The somewhat recent development over its predecessor, the Chippendale upholstered armchair, is evident in the light and airy lines and handsome tapering of the delicate inlaid legs. The serpentine of the crest is somewhat reserved over the canted back, the soft curvature of the upholstered arms retained from the prior period and supported over inlaid concave arm supports these were known contemporarily as "hoop stumps morticed on the top of the front legs (one)". The seat is large and comfortable, the generous proportions typical of this form and making it a fine lounging chair. The legs are stretched with an H-form stretcher, the medial dovetailed into either side stretcher, all other joints tenon-mortised into the legs. The front feet terminate as pyramidical stumps tenoned into the well of the caster, portions of which remain original. The delicate checkered inlay is a delightful embellishment over the fine patinated surface of the arm supports and front legs. The secondary woods of the back appear to be birch with later corner blocks. For serious collectors, this is an exceptional selection that has not been available on the open market since it was offered with the Israel sack sale of October 11th, 1931. It is preserved in very fine condition and will certainly be an excellent addition to any Neoclassical home. Notes: 1. American Furniture: the Federal Period, Montgomery, p. 159. Measurements: 29 3/4" W x 27 3/8" D x 45 3/8" H; 17 5/8" H to seat. Condition Report: Upholstery must be changed, the fabric thoroughly worn and faded from use. We have not removed the fabric to examine the under structure other than the areas already pulled back in the slideshow of images: note the added interior blocks glued at upper corners of back. Back foot castors are replacements. Front castors appear to be original (or at least of the period), the wheel and assembly and some screws 20th century replacements. Legs do not appear to have been reduced in height. A reglued chip of approximately 3" length inside of the top left leg. Small oxidized chip to top of right arm with accompanying inlay loss - barely visible when upholstery surrounds arm. Overall exceptional state of preservation.
