Lars Israel Wahlman Designed High Back Oak Swedish Arts & Crafts Armchairs

About the Item

Lars Israel Wahlman was one of Sweden’s premier architects and designers of the early 20th century - a time known for the Swedish Arts & Crafts period. Wahlman’s works are more specifically considered part of the “National Romantic style” which found inspiration in the natural world as well as in Nordic mythology, folklore, and Scandinavian vernacular styles. The Engelbrekt Church, which is in Stockholm, is one of Wahlman’s masterpieces as is Tjolöholm Castle in Hallland. This elegant pair of carved oak armchairs is a fine example of the work he created for his client’s homes. Architectural, yet very much in human scale and proportions, the chairs’ double spire-like details add a light touch to the sturdy frames. Other carved details show restraint, as with the gentle scroll armrest, along with the simple carved lines and cutouts. These chairs are in original condition, having been waxed and with newly upholstered seats and back panels. Measures: Height: 54“, width: 27.5” depth: 27”, seat height: 19.5”.
