Liceu de Artes e Ofícios
In 1873, a group of wealthy coffee merchants established the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios with the stated aim of supporting future industrialization efforts in Brazil. Seven years later, it became a fully integrated school. For over a century, it has trained the public in fields of agriculture, industry, trade, crafts, the arts and design, including furniture design, leading to the production of incredibly rare student-designed pieces still sought after today.
Borrowing its model from similar European institutions, the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios built upon methods and curricula popular at the time to instruct and train economically disadvantaged locals. In the hopes of making Brazil’s industries more competitive, the school involved eminent volunteers, including two of its directors, Brazilian architects Bettencourt da Silva and Ramos de Azevedo. At times, the school used its own exceptionally talented students as teachers when volunteers were scarce.
The Sociedade Propagadora das Belas Artes maintained the school in a building designed by Ramos in São Paulo. Ramos’s work also included notable buildings such as the Theatro Municipal de São Paulo and the Palácio das Indústrias. The school has provided furnishings for a range of hotels, like the Manaus Tropical Hotel, as well as the Cumbica International Airport.

- Minimalist Daybed, Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, Brazilian Mid-Century ModernBy Liceu de Artes e OfíciosLocated in Sao Paulo, SPThe daybed, manufactured by Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, is a prime example of mid-20th century Brazilian furniture design, which is renowned for its blend of modernist principles with traditional Brazilian materials and techniques. Liceu de Artes e Ofícios was an important institution in the development of Brazilian design, providing education and promoting craftsmanship. Their furniture production is noted for its high-quality craftsmanship and use of local materials. This particular daybed features a robust and simple wooden frame, made from native Brazilian hardwood, which is known for its durability and beautiful grain. The use of such wood not only ensures longevity but also gives the piece a warm, inviting appearance. The design of the daybed is minimalist, with clean lines and an unadorned structure that emphasizes the natural beauty of the wood. It has a low profile and a rectangular shape, which are characteristic of modernist design, aiming for functionality without sacrificing style. The cushioning on top is tufted, adding a touch of classic detailing to an otherwise modern piece. The tufting is not merely decorative but also helps to keep the upholstery in place and maintain its shape over time. The legs of the daybed are short and splayed, a design choice that provides stability and a slight mid-century aesthetic flair. The clean geometry of the daybed allows it to fit seamlessly into various interior design schemes, from the more traditional to the contemporary. Overall, this daybed represents the innovative spirit of Brazilian design from the mid-20th century, where designers and manufacturers were embracing modernist trends while fostering a unique Brazilian identity through the use of local materials and traditional craftsmanship. It's a functional, elegant piece that reflects the era's design values: form, function, and a close relationship with the materials used. About the manufacturer: The Liceu de Artes e Ofícios in São Paulo, established in 1873, is a significant Brazilian institution with a focus on technical education and has also made contributions to cultural and industrial production. The school was founded by the elite of coffee aristocrats with the positivist ideal of promoting the "dignity of man through work," aiming to prepare specialized labor for the country's future industrialization. Throughout its history, the institution has undergone several transformations. It started with simple courses such as Arithmetic and then expanded to include technical education, inspired by the European Arts and Crafts Movement, which valued the manual work of craftsmen within the capitalist industry. Under the direction of architect Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo...Category

- Jorge Zalszupin's Presidential Lounge Chair, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern DesignBy Jorge ZalszupinLocated in Sao Paulo, SPThe "Presidencial" lounge lounge armchair is a true icon of Brazilian modern design, created by the legendary Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s. This rare and coveted piece showcases the fusion of two cultures, with its base made of tubular steel and black lacquered metal slats, topped with Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood veneers in an unusual bentwood design. Zalszupin's innovative use of molded laminate wood allowed him to create the curves he desired, without the need for costly manual processes. This resulted in a beautifully unique armchair, part of a series composed of a sofa and armchair, that has become a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of Brazilian modern design. The lounge armchair's backrest is composed of profiled hardwood veneer slats, giving the piece a light and organic structure that elegantly accommodates voluminous cushions. Its "U" form seat rests on chrome-plated steel legs with tubular feet, while the armchair's rosewood-reinforced slat back adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The Presidencial lounge chair is in very good vintage condition and has received new upholsteries in suede. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect addition to any space, whether in a home or office setting. While the armchair can be displayed without its original cushions, it also comes with a custom cushion for added comfort and style. Overall, the Presidencial armchair...Category
