Louis XIII Style Arm Chair

About the Item

This impressive French arm chair chair is carved from walnut and features an upholstered antique tapestry back and boiled wool seat. The original seat cushion stuffing has been supplemented by contemporary materials. The arms and legs have been re-glued and re-lacquered. the piece dates to the early 19th century and came from Provence. Wear consistent with age and use. It was common for the upholstery to be changed over time, as needed. Accordingly, backs often do not match seats, which wear out much faster. Arm chairs of this type were usually found in large aristocratic manor houses or the homes of wealthy bourgeois. The relatively high seat allowed clothing to drape to the floor elegantly. Typically they were made in pairs and were designed for social interaction and conversation, their high backs and decorative arms providing a pleasing backdrop for the seated. Because of their sturdiness, comfort, and beauty, many have survived over 200 years.

These Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...
