Norwegian Pine Armchairs by Krogenäs Möbler, Norway 1950s
About the Item
Norway’s design aesthetic is playful and unique even among its fellow Scandinavian countries. Norway’s contribution to the golden age of Scandinavian design might have been less known, but invaluable nonetheless. These rare and striking Krogenäs armchairs stand as evidence.
There is a certain quirky charm of Norwegian design. The mid-century era saw designers craft unique pieces with natural materials and expert craftsmanship. Despite that, Norwegian design has been punching below its weight. Perhaps it was this neglect that has given Norwegian creativity its own flavour, and a potential edge. These armchairs could be pinned to any major name of the era in terms of design and quality. The solid pines bodies have carefully sculpted edges and subtle decorative elements, such as the spindles on the back and arms, and the curving armrests. The seat is slightly raised towards the front and the back bent to create a very comfortable angle for the sitter. The upholstered cushions not only add to the comfort and cosiness, but also highlight the horizontal, ribbed spindles of the back and the vertical ones on the sides supporting the armrests. Krogenäs Möbler was a historic carpentry shop dedicated to the production of wooden furniture pieces of the highest quality, most noted for their pine dining sets and seating.
Looking at this pair, it is easy to see why Norwegian design is being brought to the limelight again in the 21st century. While the country avoided the heavy promotion of its talented designers abroad in the last century, (historically, Norwegians have had a reputation for being reserved and distant – hardly suitable traits for trumpeting one’s talents) it is not only timely, but also sure that the rare design pieces will be rediscovered and celebrated.

- Carl Malmsten "Stora Furulid" Armchair for OPE-Möbler Jönköping, Sweden 1950sBy Carl MalmstenLocated in Utrecht, NLThere is a certain “Malmstenesque” charm to the Swedish designer’s pieces that manifests in the gentle but defined curves, cosy appearance and in the modern way Carl Malmsten skilfully carried the heritage of traditional allmoge (folk art) design. The expression “Swedish Modern” was first used at the 1939 New York World Fair, when the designer introduced the model “Oskar”. Similarly to that model, Malmsten remained a traditionalist, mainly concerned with comfort regarding the “Stora Furulid...Category

- Swedish Cabinetmaker Sofa and Armchairs, Sweden, 1950sLocated in Utrecht, NLSvensk design, “Swedish design”, is unquestionably a conventional and popular branding device, with many companies explicitly promoting their products as examples of god design, “good design”. But svensk design does not simply represent “good” design made in Sweden, it also projects a powerful, concrete rendering of a sort of essentialized “Swedishness” embedded in objects, such as this sofa and armchairs. Rounded out lines, unexpected curvature and innovative shapes from every angle define the design of this set. The aesthetic recalls classic English upholstered furniture...Category
