Pair of 17th Century Italian Baroque Parcel-Gilt Walnut Leather Armchairs
About the Item
A fine pair of walnut Baroque Italian armchairs dating to the middle part of the 17th century retaining parts of extremely old leather seating.
Italian circa 1650-70.
The leathered and studded square backs with elaborate foliate-carved giltwood finials, above padded seats within scroll-ended serpentine walnut arms, on turned and blocked front legs with turned double stretchers.
The leather upholstery looks extremely old with a wonderful patina and colour.
In excellent condition, as is customary today for armchairs of this age, showing signs of previous professional restoration / replacements.
The robust design with bold scrolling arms are typical of Venetian work of the period.
A very well proportioned and decorative pair of imposing armchairs.

The moulded top above a central door of architectural form with a niche and the standing classical figure of Athena flanked by dual pairs of Tuscan pillars, to the door reverse being segmented walnut and inlaid with ebonised geometric banding, opening to reveal five tortoiseshell and ebonised fronted drawers with gilt stars and ring handles, the bottom drawer concealing a further secret drawer to the rear. The portico being flanked by eight conforming drawers retaining steel locks and gilt escutcheons. The sides with segmented walnut and inlaid geometric banding and ebonised mouldings together with iron drop carrying handles, on gilt metal clad claw ebonised ball feet.
