Regency Caned Mahogany Library Chair

About the Item

This fine late-period chair made circa 1820-1830 rests on large casters in brass and the chair is deep and comfortable. Caned throughout and meant to have a loose cushion and back the chair is presented with an old set of upholstered cushions in a rather worn corduroy but these are easily changed to a more suitable fabric if so desired. The frame is very refined and the turnings that form its primary decoration are small and tight. The totally caned back and seat are in excellent condition and may have been replaced at some point, as is the finish which appears to be old but probably its second slightly darker finish. Designed as a man’s reading chair for use in large comfortable libraries this chair was a prized object in a refined English Regency home.
