"Toga" Chair by Sergio Maza for Artemide, 1968

About the Item

The "Toga" chair was designed by Sergio Mazza and produced by Artemide in 1968. It was first exhibited in 1969 at the International Furniture Exhibition in Milan. The design is an example of Mazza's excellence in aesthetic and materials. The "Toga" chair is cast in one singular piece, created through a hot press molded process to create this sculptural form. This chair can even be stacked, as it was in the advertisements from the 1960s and 1970s. They can also be seen in the 1970s television series "Space 1999." The Toga Chair was a product of the 1960s’ nonconformity and a space-age optimism in technological innovation. The Toga Chair exemplifies Mazza's architect-trained designer’s fascination with hi-tech processes and pioneering aesthetics, much of which was inspired by the fast-changing cultural scene he lived through. A model of the Toga Chair is enshrined in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
