Bale: Bench in Copper by TJ Volonis

About the Item

Title: Bale Year: 2006 An intricately woven bench skillfully constructed from 1/2" copper tubing. The frenzied top surface makes for a comfortable seat and works with the neat geometry of the frame to exemplify the balance between chaos and order: a defining theme of Volonis' work. This piece can also function as a coffee table by adding a glass top. ________________ ABOUT THE ARTIST: A self-taught artist, TJ Volonis’ creative work incorporates a wide variety of themes: human biological processes, the natural world and man's relationship to it, hidden systems, technology and contemporary culture, and the implicit balance between order and chaos, among others. He views his work as a collaboration between the material with its limitations and his own intentions and designs. TJ received a BA in Japanese Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After graduating, he moved to Brooklyn and has been a resident of the borough for the last 15 years, designing furniture and creating art for the last 11 of those years. He lives in Park Slope and works out of a metalworks studio in Gowanus. His work has appeared in: Architectural Digest, LUXE, The New York Observer, Wallpaper* Magazine, Elle Decor, Lonny Magazine, Freshome, Design Milk, Core 77, Artsicle, Gotham Gazette, and Examiner. He was also selected as one of NYC's top emerging artists in December of 2011 and 2013 and was the 2005 Best Emerging Artist in Mixed Media at the GLAAD OUTAuction.

  • Vaisseau Bench in Copper Handcrafted in India by Paul Mathieu
By Paul Mathieu (French), Stephanie Odegard Collection
    Located in New York, NY
The traditional metal clad furniture he found in India inspired renowned designer Paul Mathieu to create this elegant and curvaceous storage bench. The arcing sides and top of this piece are hand carved from solid pieces of teak. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable inset tray. Pattern makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the bench from thick sheets of copper, brass or white bronze. Once the bench is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight fitting skin of white bronze, copper or brass. The metal finish will tarnish over time, but regular non-abrasive household metal polish can be used to restore the original luster. Vaisseau Bench...
