Dignified Victorian Carved Oak Hall Bench. Circa 1850

Sorry, this item from Florian Papp Inc. has been sold.

#K545
Victorian hall bench executed in a golden oak and enriched with carved details.
Note the shaped, pierced and carved back. The foliate scrolls center a roundel inscribed “IMPERIAL” above a well carved crown. The rectangular seat is raised on round turned legs.
Numerous 18-19th century designers and cabinetmakers made this special variety of chairs and benched for halls. Sheraton described them "for the use of servants and strangers waiting for business". The formal character of hall chairs and their bold form backs rendered them highly suitable for decorative treatment and are often found painted or carved with a family cipher or crest.
English, Circa 1840
