Douglas Deeds for Architectural Fiberglass Blue Bench

About the Item

Douglas Deeds for Architectural Fiberglass, bench, fiberglass, United States of America, 1960s Sculptural fiberglass bench designed by Douglas Deeds for Architectural Fiberglass. The fiberglass is molded into a sculptural shape, creating a minimal bench that can be used indoors as well as outdoors. Architectural Fiberglass (a division of Architectural Pottery that was established in 1961) was run by Max Lawrence, who with his company, had a significant share in the development of the post-war Mid-Century style of California. He manufactured innovative geometrical shapes in ceramics, but also experimented with the use of fiberglass to create new and interesting forms. Douglas Deeds embraced these innovative materials as well and served as the director of Architectural Fiberglass from the early 1960s. Not only Deeds designs in fiberglass were in demand, but iconic designs by Elsie Crawford were also brought to market by the company as well. Please note that this bench shows signs of wear and use, according to its age.

  • Blue Fiberglass Bench by Walter Papst for Wilkhahn, Germany, 1960s
    By Walter Papst
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Stunning blue fiberglass bench designed by Walter Papst for Wilkhahn, Germany, 1960s. Walter Papst was one of the first European designers to use fiberglass to fabricate furniture. The design of the bench is naive, almost simplistic since it is made out of 1 piece of molded fiberglass. But nonetheless, it is a very sophisticated item because it was made with beautiful slanted angles, which gives it a very sculptural and architectural look. The stunning bright blue color makes it pure eye candy. The blue color is the original color and could be described as 'modernist blue' or 'le corbusier blue...
