Long Upholstered Os de Mouton Bench, c. 1800

About the Item

This gorgeous cushioned bench from the late 18th century is crafted in the Louis XIV style with an upholstered top and beautifully carved legs and stretchers. The walnut base is carved in a style known as os-de-mouton, or sheep's bone, a quintessential element of Louis XIV furniture. The winding, curvy design was named as such because the shape of the chair legs were thought to resemble the legs of a lamb. We love the contrast between the ottoman's modern striped upholstery and the sculptural lines drawn by the sinuous stretchers. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer. Recently reupholstered in a colorful Paul Smith striped wool fabric.
