17th Century Gilded Italian Chiavari Chairs

About the Item

Offered for your consideration are a pair of antique Italian 17th century gilded Empire Chiavari chairs. Gilded willow hardwood with woven cane seat. Hand-carved ornamentation to top rail. Lathed legs, spindles and stretchers. Heavy losses to gilding and dry cracks with genuine patina from over a century of use. Chiavari chairs originated in the city of Chiavari, Italy and are the creation of early 17th century Italian cabinet maker Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi. Know for the incredible woodworking and craftsmanship. Characterised by their light construction without compromising on structural integrity.
