About the Item

"Dagobert" Armchair of Steel and Brass, France c.1940. This chair takes it name from the throne of the last of the Merovingian kings originally made from bronze in the form of a "Curule" chair. The unique form of two half circles placed atop each other is known as a curule and was first seen during the era of Classical Roman Imperium. The curule has always been associated with power and royalty as only persons with positions of authourity were allowed to be seated in these chairs. Originally these chairs were made of solid materials without any cushions to remind the sitter that their position was temporary and any and all business was to be completed in a timely manner. As the centuries passed the form of a curule chair continued as a seat of power and spread its influential profile throughout France, England and Italy. This particular chair is important because of the two metals employed to make it, polished steel and brass, and their substantial quality and weight. In addition the chair has an unusual curved design located beneath the seat not only on the front but also on the reverse side. Be sure to notice that there is a circular medallion in the centre of the curves made of brass with a textured surface. Also the four uprights above the front of the seat and the back of the chair are embellished with boldly scaled solid brass finials. In order to balance the chair all four of the legs are capped in large brass feet again with a circular profile. The upholstery is original but will hopefully be changed as it does nothing to enhance the sculptural impact of the chair.
