“Dordogne” style Chairs with Woven Papercord Seats and Backs, Europe ca 1960s

About the Item

This charming pair of European dining chairs was born from a desire to create a design that was comfortable, organic, and cosy in its simplicity. The design, reminiscent of Charlotte Perriand’s famous “Dordogne” chair model, incorporates subtle, yet stunning decorative elements on a base that European mid-century designers liked to call “honest design”. This set carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and French mid-century design – simple, functional – and shows the more and more beloved rustic side of European design of the era. This set’s aesthetic is defined by the thick wooden lines and the minimal structures framing the woven papercord seats and backs. The design is consciously dictated by the elemental beauty of the organic materials; the wood has a captivating grain with hues that vary between light and dark. Against the light papercord, the dark colour variation stands out even more bringing the attention to the precisely carved frames. The legs in the back are elongated allowing the backrests to be woven and stretched between them. The weaving is spectacular that is most apparent in the backs. The seats’ weaving shows the consideration for the sitter with a sturdy, ergonomic shape. The structure of the design has an airy and organic look that is further enhanced by the box stretchers reinforcing the legs’ structural stability. The overall design of this pair is reminiscent of the French brutalist pieces of the era with the additional charm provided by the expertly woven papercord backs and seats. This design element pairs beautifully with the solid wood bodies, and gives this set’s pieces their rustic and organic charm and style. Defined by clean, organic lines, and exceptional craftsmanship, each of these chairs was created by skilled craftsmen who made sure they were durable, sturdy, and functional; while their expertise and use of high-quality wood and papercord make each piece a beautiful design heirloom on its own as well. • Wood Turned Chairs with Woven Rush Seats, Europe Ca 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-century designers were eager to break free from the aesthetics of the past and experiment with new forms, and techniques. At the same time, especially in Europe, the modernist design movement was often based on traditional styles and techniques, such as turned chairs. Turned chairs — sometimes called thrown chairs or spindle chairs — represent a style of Elizabethan or Jacobean turned furniture that had a vogue in the late 16th and early 17th century. The technique was carried on to the 20th century and was widespread in Europe as well, where craftsmen created durable pieces for various interiors and purposes. In turned furniture, the individual wooden spindles of the piece were made by shaping them with chisels and gouges while they were being spun, or turned between the centre points of a lathe. The construction of this pair is evocative of the more robust Arts and Crafts Movement, featuring subtle decorative elements such as the finials atop the backs. The sphere-shaped finials aren’t the only ornamentations on the design; the shape of the two splats on the back, the carved stretchers and carving on the feet are all decorative features that make this pair visually arresting. In later turned chairs, like this pair, rush seats were common. Here, the seats are woven around the frames with a light colour that beautifully contrasts to the dark, patinated wood. The partnership of the two natural materials is very effective as well; the wood and rush pair...
