Rare and beautiful French Louis XVI style Voyelle (or Ponteuse) chair, 19th century, from a private collection of the French Riviera.
These chairs were used by gentlemen to sit astride and watch others playing cards and a variety of parlour games, leaning elegantly against the padded back top.
Trianon grey patinated wood, very beautiful striped shirred fabric from France.

This very rare and exceptional low chair is very old, and has withstood the test of time in a remarkably good state, with a minor loss to the base of the caning in a lower corner of the back (see picture). The caning has a lovely pattern. This low, deep chair was probably a fireside chair. However small metal bolts in the back suggest that it may have at some point been attached, possibly to a vehicle or to some kind of carrying device. It is beautiful and highly decorative.
