Moooi Smoke Chair '2004' by Maarten Baas, Dutch Design, Post-Modern

About the Item

Manufactured by Moooi in 2003-2004, Maarten Baas’ series of Smoke Chairs are made of expensive leather in a burnt wood frame — a truly original and unique choice of materials. Smoke was Baas’ graduation project at the Design Academy Eindhoven, designed around a thesis on beauty and perfection: ‘In nature, everything is in flux, which creates a certain beauty. Yet, it’s a very human tendency to keep things as they are supposed to be and keep them beautiful as they originally were. Smoke plays with both perceptions of beauty.’ After Baas set the pieces on fire, they are preserved in a clear epoxy resin, which makes them usable again. When needed, pieces are re-upholstered or otherwise fixed so that they get back their original function. In 2004, Moss gallery in New York City commissioned Maarten for a solo show with burned design classics. Smoke pieces are in collections of main museums, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Groninger Museum. The listed chair is in a lovely pre-owned condition and still retains its original and unopened First Aid Kit.

  • Set of 4 Galvanitas Oosterhout NV S16 Compass Chairs, Dutch Design, 1950s
    By Galvanitas
    Located in CULEMBORG, GE
For sale is a lovely set of four Galvanitas S16 Compass Chairs, arguably the most iconic school chair ever produced. The first to design with sheet metal was obviously Jean Prouve, but in The Netherlands the experiments with these classic compass leg subframes really exploded in the 1950s. Friso Kramer and Wim Rietveld designed the similar looking Result Chair for Ahrend in the same period, but the S16 turned out to be the most successful —featuring in most schools and canteens of office- and government buildings. Made from a sheet steel frame with a fine laminated and formed seat and back by Pagholz, the iconic S16 Chair...

Historically they played a significant role with their progressive principles: L.O.V. was for example the first factory to introduce the modern 8-hours working day.
