Paolo Buffa Style Pair of Chiavari Chairs in Italian Wood with High Backrest

About the Item

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Exquisite, iconic, and famous pair of Italian side entrance chairs; they are characterized by the clean, essential and refined line, they are the exclusive model of the production of Chiavari (Italy) with handmade details of great value and show the structure and the typical carving with the turned attack to reinforce the slender legs; the seat is covered with an original and multicolor fabric of excellent cotton. They were made between 1950 and 1955 by skilled craftsmen in the city of Chiavari (Italy) who were inspired by the style of the famous Italian designer Paolo Buffa. The artisans have faithfully followed the two-centuries-old production technique; they have chosen the wood in the woodlands of the Ligurian hinterland (beech), cutting it taking into account precise characteristics such as the seasonal period and the lunar phase, at which point the seasoning is carried out in a strictly natural way, for which two to five years are necessary; The real workmanship can begin only when the wood is dried to perfection and is carried out with manual machinery, some components are instead turned by hand with a degree of finish unmatched by any industrial machinery and finally, the chairs are meticulously finished by hand until even the smallest imperfection is eliminated. The finished product is the result of these indisputable qualities, an expression of art that combines elegance, lightness, perfect finishing, and a guaranteed surprising sturdiness. A curiosity: Chiavari's craftsmen claim that one of their chairs can be lifted only with the little finger and at the same time can be used daily without any fear. In Chiavari, a good school of furniture artisans was already flourishing in the golden age of the Republic of Genoa. The history of the "artistic chairs of Chiavari" begins in 1796 when the challenge for the search of new forms was launched by the Economic Society (a group of noble intellectuals) to the furniture makers of the city. These first chairs were created, at the beginning of 1800, by Gaetano Descalzi, called "il Campanino", a name that still today identifies the oldest model from which the "chiavarina" typology has developed. Thus were born the chairs known throughout the world for their essential shape, linked to the characteristic lightness and strength. The most important Italian designers were influenced and made prototypes in Chiavari, Paolo Buffa, Guglielmo Ulrich, and Gio Ponti. The last two continued productions in Brianza. Paolo Buffa (born 1903, Milan - died 1970, Milan) was an Italian furniture designer who defined his own unique design aesthetic to become one of the most sought-after Italian designers of his time. Buffa excelled at creating high-quality pieces that spoke to the affluent clientele of the time. The chairs are in good condition. Measures width cm.43, depth cm.38, height cm.125. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, styrofoam, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.

  • Paolo Buffa Style Italian Pair on Benches Brass Legs and Guild Fabric
    By Paolo Buffa
    Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest that you read the entire description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our objects. Iconic and elegant pair of benches; the whole structure is solid, and the elegantly shaped legs are an integral and important part of the whole design and with their inclination make the benches very stable. In addition, the legs have a rare construction peculiarity: the core is made of wood and the outer covering is made of brass (see photo); the shaping of the entire form is very elegant and understated. The benches were created between 1960 and 1965 in the Brianza area (Lombardy, Italy), a historic location known for its designer furniture made with great craftsmanship. The artisans were inspired by the style of Paolo Buffa, with the desire to design two objects with small dimensions favoring the idea of comfort and coziness, and gave the benches a timeless originality, following the fashion of those years; we know for certain that the architect Buffa used Lombard craftsmen of recognized skill for the construction of his furniture, who used very refined materials also because the objects were intended mainly for the apartments of the rich Milanese bourgeoisie; our benches with their characteristics of quality, accuracy, and finish, were certainly made by those master craftsmen. Paolo Buffa (1903-1970) was an Italian architect and designer known for his mid-century furniture designs. More than a forerunner, he is a faithful spokesman for the taste of his time: neoclassical first and Novecentist later. Paolo Buffa was highly esteemed internationally for his refined design and rigorous execution, displaying expertise that was singularly Italian. Before his death in 1970 in Milan, Italy, Buffa had been named one of the country's leading designers. The structure has been left in its original condition, while we have upholstered the top with an iconic and sophisticated "cut velvet "with a unique pattern with a geometric cut by Designer Guild; the pattern is Quarenghi-Cocoa, one of the company's best fabrics. (see original Guild set photo). Color and classic reinvented and reinterpreted in a current key. Striking combinations, big flowers, elegant design. • Biedermeier Style Danish Chair in Wood and Fabric

We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Particular and elegant chair with a solid and functional structure; the most interesting part of the chair is the elaborate and imaginative backrest with a harmonious and refined design; in the middle, there is precious woodwork, carved with skill and ability by a master cabinetmaker; the front legs have been meticulously turned to give them a light and proportionate shape, while the rear ones have a slightly curved square section; the seat top is removable and a wooden pin on the front crossbar allows the top itself to fit perfectly into its natural housing. The seat upholstery was replaced in ancient times and is in good condition (a bit of wear on the front, see photo) so we did not consider doing any restoration on the whole chair because its authentic look and slight imperfections make it really seductive and fascinating and attest its antiquity. The chair was handcrafted in Denmark in perfect Biedermeier style using African...
