Scabello Chair Pair Hall Renaissance Revival Italian Baroque Oak Scabello Scroll

About the Item

- The design and detailing of these exhuberant backstools demonstrate why Italian Renaissance furniture was as highly prized as old-master paintings. - This design was associated with Venice and the design was disseminated throughout Europe in the late-16th century. The 19th century saw a revival of this period of furniture in palazzo’s and large country houses/ - The carving is of an exceptional quality and these chairs transform furniture into sculpture. - The ornament is drawn from a classic Renaissance vocabulary. - Known as sgabello, derived from scabellum (Latin for ‘stool’), they stood in sets along the walls of the portego, which was used for celebrations and display and were moved around and seat-cushions added as occasion demanded. The crestings with central acanthus leaf and scrollwork either side of masks. The backs with a central cartouche surrounded by scrollwork and acanthus leaf motifs. The circular seats with a ring of leaves and scrolls in each corner supported by a shaped front board carved with animal masks, a central vase, scrollwork and acanthus leaves on paw feet. The shaped back board with gadrooning. Excellent original color and patina.
