Small Wood and Wicker Chair by a European Cabinetmaker, Europe, Ca 1950s

About the Item

During the past decades, small-scale furniture pieces were created for various purposes, and have become sought-after works again in the 21st century. This solid wood and wicker chair is a beautiful example, evidently made by a skilled craftsman. Small-scale furniture and the purposes of its use have fascinated collectors both in Europe and America. It is important to note the difference between various types of so-called miniature furniture. Some furniture was made for use by children in the nursery, such as stools, tables and the still commonly found child’s chairs, approximately half size. This chair may have been a small-scale version of a masterpiece, an apprentice piece, or show piece. The partnership of two natural materials is very effective, the wood and wicker pair flawlessly to showcase the skill of the maker. While it is generally rare to find ornamentation on pieces from this era, it wasn’t uncommon on small-scale works. Here, the large spheres at the end of the legs and backrest make this chair visually diverse, adding roundness to the otherwise straight lines of the structure. Surviving finer pieces of small-scale furniture, such as this chair, point to a craftsman showing skills as if for examination and approval. As observed in this chair, the fine wickerwork and the flawless woodworking could have served as a visual resume of its clever maker. Condition: In good vintage condition. A set of four dining room or side chairs designed by Anna-Luelja Praun (1906-2004), Vienna, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1950. The seats and backs are covered with cane or wicker. The cane of two chairs has been restored. On one chair five of the cane straps have been replaced with new ones and on the other one seven. The new cane is currently brighter than the original old one but it will age gradually and become darker. The wooden parts have been restored. The chairs are in good condition and ready to use. Lit: Eva B. Ottilinger, Möbeldesign der 50er Jahre, p. 136 About Anna-Lülja Praun: Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria. In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch). From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop "Haus und Garten" which was established by Josef Frank in 1925. In 1959 she designed a bench "Bank zum Ausruhen" for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.
