Milo Baughman Chrome & Cane Square Tub Chair Blue Rust Fabric 1438 Thayer Coggin

About the Item

Stunning vintage chrome and cane square tub chair with blue & rust fabric Model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Stunning vintage chrome and cane square tub chair with blue & rust fabric Model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, this chair came to us without its legs/feet. We produced replacement feet as close to the originals as we could ascertain. The fabric has two places on the front base bottom edge where we have added patches and a few minor snags throughout. We would not be opposed to using it as is – we like the patina, but most will want to recover. It is priced accordingly. The caning is good. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1970’s. Tub chair, EXTRORDINAIRE!!!!! WOW!!! Isn’t it breathtaking? We certainly think so! This is a phenomenal vintage square tub chair model #1438 designed by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. This fabulous chair design is still in current production by Thayer Coggin; but this one is the vintage original! And it wears its ORIGINAL lovely blue and rust striped and patterned fabric… We realize that said fabric is in “wonderfully worn” condition; however, it’s so great that we would use it the way it is so we could enjoy it a bit, but most will want to recover. Even though we love this fabric we can also imagine it wearing a soft neutral colored fabulous mohair or one of Jack Lenor Larsen’s phenomenal current production fabrics! This incredible chair has loose seat and back cushions of foam and poly which nestle nicely into the inner chair frame that is also all upholstered. All of this is then supported and surrounded on both sides and back by the gorgeous cane and chrome outer frame. Talk about SUPERB comfort and ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS design!!! We did have to do a little modification to this lovely chair as we acquired it without legs, or possibly a swivel base, so we have added custom-made-as-close-to-the-originals-as-we-could short round wood legs and it looks incredible!! It is going to look amazing in your modern living room next to a wonderful sofa or loveseat, in a corner of your bedroom, or in a sitting room next to a fantastic floor lamp. In addition, it would look marvelous in an industrial setting, contemporary country home, or surrounded by some Hollywood Regency decor. One of the most remarkable partnerships in the mid-century modern to modern design world was the phenomenal furniture making duo of Milo Baughman and Thayer Coggin. Milo Baughman, a 20th Century genius of design, was born in Western Kansas in 1923 but was moved a year later by his family to Long Beach, California. He created Milo Baughman Design Inc. in 1947 and began designing interiors and furniture. Thayer Coggin was born in 1922 in Denton, North Carolina. Twelve years later his family moved 25 miles north to High Point where he grew up surrounded by furniture manufacturing. Thayer’s first love was furniture and Milo’s was design. So, together in 1953, after the two met, history was made in American furniture making by one of the greatest collaborations in the industry. During his career and before his death in 2003, Milo did design for several other companies as well as his own, but it is his collaboration with Thayer Coggin that is most impressive and sought-after today. Thayer Coggin, Inc. is still in business today even after its namesake’s death and is still offering classic selections from the late Baughman’s designs. Gorgeous vintage modern rosewood pair of cube shaped nightstands by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. Comprised of gorgeous rosewood veneer, brass plated steel bands, and a single ebonized drawer in each nightstand. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are a few chips, nicks, or dings in the wood veneer and some rust spots on the brass plated steel bands. The smaller veneer flaws were filled while larger pieces were replaced for restoration, and it looks beautiful. The bands have been professionally cleaned and we left them with their small scratches, rust spots, and age marks as we did not want to change the authenticity of the piece and honestly, we love the look of a little age patina. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1970’s. NOTE: We have matching pieces including a queen headboard, large mirror, a wardrobe, and these nightstands.  You can find them all for sale here if they are still available. Double Debonaire!!! • Set of Milo Baughman Biedermeier Lounge Chairs for Thayer Coggin
    By Milo Baughman, Thayer Coggin
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This Biedermeier 90 collection, Milo Baughman did with Thayer Coggin in the is one of the last collections Milo and Coggin did together in the 1990's. Milo Baughman believed the midcentury style needed to be warmed up a bit. For admirers of Biedermeier furniture, the neoclassical style that flourished in Austria and Germany from 1815-1830, the choices are few: scarce and expensive antique pieces and now, Milo Baughman's Biedermeier 90 collection for Thayer Coggin, a furniture maker in High Point, N.C. ''When I teach the history of modern design, I start with Biedermeier, because it's the first indication that there would be a new philosophy in design, furniture designed to be more honest and simple,'' said Mr. Baughman, who has designed furniture for Thayer Coggin since 1953 and also teaches design at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The 27-piece collection, which includes consoles, tables and upholstered seating, captures the spirit of Biedermeier design with honey-colored wood veneers, neoclassical fluted columns and natural steel finishes. - Ref NYTIMES, 8/10/1989 “Eurostyle started out as a fairly valid design statement,” says Milo Baughman, a highly regarded veteran furniture designer who teaches at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. ''But when it was reduced to more commercial levels and picked up too quickly by people who make cheap furniture...
