Pair of Art Deco Style Club Chairs with Wooden Arms

About the Item

A pair of Hungarian Mid-Century style arm chairs with walnut veneer and chenille upholstery. Hungarian furniture makers have been exceptionally skilled with wood veneers since the Biedermeier era. These stylish chairs date to the 1950's and draw on original Hungarian Art Deco traditions. Whereas French Art Deco and Mid-Century pieces often employed exotic veneers, Hungarian pieces usually used walnut as it was domestically available. The sophistication of Hungarian workmanship is so high that many of these pieces (including new ones) are often relabeled as "French Art Deco" and sold in France as French products. In fact, Hungary was a center of furniture craft and, except for the use of expensive veneers, equal to France in skill and quality. The reason Hungarian pieces are not better known is that after World War 2, Hungary was behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet sphere and somewhat harder to travel to than destinations in Western Europe.
