About the Item

This carefully designed and handcrafted contemporary wide rattan whickered woven lounge chair by Tomaz Viana has an elegant appearance with the rattan transparency giving it a fresh lightness. It has a sculptural and unusual shape with its open diagonal arms reaching to the widely separated front legs as an invitation to rest. It was designed and made as a first experiment on applying the sculptural possibilities of wicker work. As a prototype, several improvements, both aesthetic on some fine details and ergonomic were identified to be made. A rectified design of the chair is to be done for it to be as comfortable and beautiful as it should be. A limited edition of six units is to be produced. A daybed or chaise longue with a similar exploration of the wicker sculptural plasticity is to be made. There are several sketches and ideas in progress. The whole piece is structured by a fine and intricate hidden system of joints and classical woodworking techniques were applied. Made from solid French white oak and hand whickered. Finished without sandpaper or modern technologies, instead, the surface is smoothed with a hand plane and other cutting blade tools, the original techniques used in the 18th century. This methods require years of expertise, knowledge of the material and handling of tools, from it, the surfaces acquire a special patina and since the whole piece of furniture is wood carved, the cut wooden fibres transmit to the sight and touch a sense of poetic and soft primitiveness.
