18th c. Swedish Rococo Period Painted Dining Chairs with Slip Seats

About the Item

A very fine set of six Swedish dining chairs from the Rococo period, newly upholstered in linen with pierced splat backs, shell motif on the backs, seat frames, and legs, carved and shaped seat rail, refined cabriole legs, H-stretcher, and sip seats. Beautifully proportioned chairs with a restrained elegance. The patina is a soft, neutral gray. Circa 1760. The Rococo period followed the Baroque period and is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement. The period began in the 1720's and continued through 1770. Rococo takes its name from the French word 'rocaille,' which means rock or broken shell. This period was characterized by elaborately carved, smaller and more functional pieces, the cabriole leg, and cherub, fruit, shell, flower, and scroll motifs.
