Bas van Pelt Set of Six Dining Chairs for My Home, The Netherlands, 1930s

This elegant armchair by Dutch designer, Bas Van Pelt is a classically luxe model with a level of craftsmanship that’s immediately visible to any eye. The construction of this rare 1940s design is simple at its core, but thanks to the details, it is a unique representation of early Dutch modernism. While Bas Van Pelt's creative work was primarily influenced by the 1920s straight lines dominated by The Hague School, this armchair is the result of his more mature design era, which was primarily dominated by natural materials and more curvature. While made of solid wood, this armchair has an open feel to it thanks to the airy arrangement of the arms and legs. The curved lines of the armrests are beautifully crafted and follow the raised seat’s angle. The curves nicely contrast with the straight lines of the frame, keeping it from appearing too strict. Apart from the expert woodwork, the upholstered seat and back stand out as well. The light bouclé fabric is tightly fitted around the frame, and the seat’s thick shape is an especially pleasing element that offers plenty of comfort both figuratively and literally. The overreaching backs further enhance the back’s widening shape and thus allow the individual loops of the yarn to stand out. The block legs blend seamlessly into the back and form a gentle angle. Thanks to the well-chosen proportions and the luxurious upholstery, this armchair provides great comfort. This model can be easily used as an accent chair thanks to its characteristic details, but can also complement a wide variety of interior styles with it refined and elegant style. Bas van Pelt’s progressive designs were, in many ways, ahead of his era. The Dordrecht-born designer’s furniture models are quite rare, a few are preserved in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for modern art, contemporary art, and design. This is a chair of extreme comfort, with multiple joinery and construction techniques. It is a little lower than the standard lounge chair, and that is exactly what provides great ergonomics and aesthetics. The seat and back form an obtuse angle which assures the perfect lounging position. The removable cushions upholstered in brown cow hide add even more comfort, while the fabric’s texture stands out nicely against the smooth wooden surfaces. The flowing structure displays beautifully curved lines and rounded edges that are broken by the straight wooden slats on the back. Bas van Pelt may be the most well-known for his seating designs, but this rare magazine rack shows the designer’s less known side. The design of this model feels contemporary and shows off the creativity of van Pelt. This type of storage is often referred to as a display rack, which is especially apt for this model. The black lacquered wired metal body is arranged in an airy design that allows the display of magazines and books. The curving shape of the five arches create a modern, artistic look crowned - quite literally - by the single pole in the middle with a ring at the end. This feature gives the design that extra element that distinguishes it from other models, while also serving a functional role. The entire rack can be picked up easily thanks to the ring, further, it still manages to stand out and grab the eye despite its small size. This set of dining chairs by Danish designer Ole Wanscher features distinctive splayed legs and fine exposed joinery in the back. The design is honest and simple with a refined technique and materials which makes this set a true example of mid-century Danish design. The simple and refined aesthetic of these chairs was achieved by Wanscher reinventing classic forms. This set consists of six individual chairs, two of them with armrests. The solid wood frame is made of stained mahogany in a warm, dark colour. The backs of the chairs have delicate dovetail joints, a joinery technique where the end grain is exposed from both boards, creating a dovetail-like pattern. The legs are slightly splayed, which is a reoccurring design element of Ole Wanscher. The general style of these chairs is both accessible and elegant, employing slender and gently curved lines. The seats have been reupholstered in a premium navy-blue fabric, complimenting the elegant mahogany frames. CADO began as modernist furniture producer France & Søn, and entered a new phase when successful Danish designer Poul Cadovius took ownership sometime between 1964 and ‘67. The company’s collaboration with Wanscher among others, paved the way for the style which later became known as Danish Modern. Wanscher studied at the Danish School of Art and Design, and was highly influenced by his professor, Kaare Klint. After graduation, Wanscher worked with Klint between 1924 and 1927, then set up his first own office, specialising in furniture design. By the end of the 1940s, Wanscher made a name for himself for his quality designs. As the Danish newspaper Politiken put it: “'Owning a Wanscher-chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts”.
