Pair Regency Simulated Rosewood & Leather Trafalgar Chairs, Circa 1820
About the Item
A pair of Regency scroll back chairs in simulated rosewood and black leather inset seats. Circa 1820.
The chairs have a rope twist turned top rail, with a carved central rail, and terminate on sabre front legs. National pride in the British naval achievements was high during the 19th Century, and the rope twist rail had intentional nautical connotations. This was popular in the Regency period and in the decades after Trafalgar.
The chairs are in very good condition for their age, showing some light signs of use to the finish, and have a good polish. They have also been cleaned and waxed. There are signs of historic woodworm mainly to one leg and to a front frieze, please refer to the last two photographs. There has also been an old repair to the back leg, as shown in photograph number 11. This is very solid and the chairs are both very sturdy with no loose joints.
The seats have been re-covered in an aged black leather.
