About the Item
Incredible vintage Modern orange & black painted tube cantilever sling lounge chairs in the style of Jerry Johnson, a pair. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, the original chrome tube was too rough to leave so they have been given a fresh black painted finish. The canvas cushions and slings have been professionally cleaned but they still have some stubborn stains, and the canvas condition is rough on the arms so many will want to reupholster. This is a striking pair of vintage cantilever sling chairs in the style of Jerry Johnson. They are comprised of cantilever frames that were previously chrome however, it was pretty rough and we thought they would look spectacular painted black... and BOY were we RIGHT!!! One might even call it “That Old Black Magic!” … Frankie would!! They’re incredible!!! The orange canvas cushions are removeable, and the attached slings have a pocket sewn on the outside arm convenient for resting your book, phone, or television remote. They will be fabulous seating for your industrial open loft space, but they would also be wonderful in a bedroom, sitting room, or comfortable extra seating for your sunroom or lanai. Just the spot to sit back… put a relaxing Sinatra album on the turntable… and know that “The Best is Yet to Come!” Are they comfortable? VERY. Are they versatile? DEFINITELY. Will they go with many design styles? ABSOLUTELY!! These fabulous orange & black cantilever sling chairs check ALL of the boxes… Plus they will make a BOLD statement in your home! We are selling them as a pair, circa 1960s-1970s. This pair of outdoor lounge chairs is just too cool!! They are called the Idyllwild chair and designed by Jerry Johnson for Landes Manufacturing Co. circa 1968. Johnson was also involved in creating the “new” material called polyvinyl chloride, or PVC plastic which he formed into tubes and slats to produce not only the Idyllwild chair but several other bent tubular-frame designs. This pair has a Kelly-green mesh sling as well as back and seat cushions. They are adorned with white contrasting buttons. I’m going to quote an excerpt from the book California Design by Jo Lauria and Suzanne Baizerman that best describes these chairs: Johnson’s Idyllwild chair and lounge chair and ottoman revealed the versatility of the material and its rich design possibilities. The Idyllwild chair, made of interlocking PVC tubes rolled down at the edges, presented a casual and whimsical form, while the flowing, curved geometries of the tubular-framed lounge chair and ottoman gave a move elegant and elevated presence to outdoor furnishings.
