Danish Modern Easy Chair with Exotic Wood Arms and Oak Legs, Denmark 1950s

About the Item

The Danish cabinetmakers' annual exhibitions began in 1927 and continued through until 1966, for almost the whole of what is now seen as the classic period of early modern Danish design. This easy chair carries subtle, but obvious features of this famous era. As exemplified by this model’s design, Danish modern furniture design is renowned for its timeless elegance, functionality, and minimalist aesthetic, favouring the use of natural materials, clean lines, and craftsmanship. Easy chairs were initially designed for comfort and relaxation. However, it was the Danish modern movement that elevated them to one of the most desired seating forms, encapsulating the perfect blend of comfort and aesthetics. This model pairs its innovative form with luxurious materials such as teak and bouclé. The frame has a distinct, sharply-curved look which is especially pronounced from the sides. The design element that stands out immediately is the use of different woods; the armrests are decorated with teak wood, utilized by Danish designers for its rich grain and colour. This relatively simple but ingenious detail highlights the sharp, pointed angle of the arms while also serving a decorative role. The tapered legs are crafted from similarly beautiful and extra durable oak wood. The precision of the frame and the modern aesthetic results from that Danish designers were often also trained architects who closely collaborated with master cabinetmakers to manifest their designs. Danish modern easy chairs have not only stood the test of time but continue to inspire contemporary designers and homeowners worldwide. Their enduring popularity is a testament to the genius of Danish modern design, which emphasizes both form and function, resulting in pieces such as this chair that is as comfortable as it is stylish. • Mongolian Shearling Easy Chair with Tapered Wood Legs, Europe ca 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This stunning chair revolves around high-quality materials, comfort, and the mastery of the era’s European cabinetmakers. The design is focused on the aesthetics of modernism whilst employing the exquisite qualities of its upholstery. In many ways this chair transcends the word ‘modern’ thanks to its unique look. The flamboyant look is the result of the brilliant pairing of materials. The solid wood structure’s smooth lines stand out even under the highly textural shearling while also accentuating the individuality of the upholstery. The soft fibres of the lightweight, curly Mongolian shearling drape beautifully over the structure, while the warm greyish colour adds a lot of depth. As opposed to traditional shearling, Mongolian lamb/shearling (also known as shag) is a long, flouncy fur celebrated for its softness and luxurious volume. The desire to keep functionality and comfort at the core of the design is visible, especially in the gently curved and reclined back and the tapered legs. The solid wood legs’ dark colour and smoothness stands out beautifully against the lighter body, creating a balanced look. Thanks to its visual qualities, mainly the shearling’s lush texture and colour, this infinitely cosy chair...

  • Danish Cabinetmaker High-Back Chair with Stained Beech Arms, Denmark, 1950s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Throughout Scandinavia, there is a long history of pride in craftsmanship using natural materials like wood. This is especially true for Denmark, and this beautiful high-back chair is a great representation of the quality and craftsmanship of Danish master cabinetmakers. “Danish Modern” is a recognized term around the world standing for the characteristic style of Danish design created during the mid-20th century. Danish designers were often trained architects themselves, resulting in masterful structures as seen in this high-back chair’s frame. The gentle but crisp angles created from the stained beech are the main decorative elements, especially on the exposed arms that extend to form the front legs effortlessly. However, it is the partially upholstered arms that and robust back that set this model apart. The upholstery engages with the frame uniquely, accentuating the outlines and the beautiful stained beech as well. From the lightly curved “ears” to the lightly reclined back and the tapered legs, the design showcases the best characteristics of Mid-Century Modern design. In service of the “form follows function” ideal of the era, the design is completed by a thick seat cushion that overreach the seat, thus aiding the ultimate lounging experience. The beechwood’s smoothness paired with the soft upholstery’s rich colour and texture creates an elegant, stylish aesthetic. Looking at this chair, it becomes easy to understand the reason behind the major rise in popularity that Mid-Century Modern has been experiencing for decades now. The natural and unfading beauty of the wooden frames and the quality fabrics help to enhance the genius of the structure. With an outstanding design and craftsmanship, this Danish cabinetmaker chair...
