Don Shoemaker Sling Sloucher Chairs Señal, Sculptural and Organic, Mexico

About the Item

Don S. Shoemaker (1919-1990) was a US (NE) born Mexican designer and painter, probably the most representative designer of Mexico Modernist furniture design. In 1960, he established, along with his wife Barbara, the Señal S.A. furniture factory in Mexico, where they had settled in 1947, having fallen in love with the country's nature and its amazing exotic woods. The Sling chair is an archetypal example of the first and most significative side of Don Shoemaker's work : revisiting traditional Mexican furniture shapes through an exploration of a sculptural and organic design in wood and leather, with impressive curves and a precise woodworking, avoiding the use of screws and metal parts, creating an alchemy of appealing rounded shapes that never betrays the accurate and detailed construction. Described as a modernist version of the Mexican Butaque chair, made of Mexican local woods, these chairs are definitely outstanding pieces.

The Djinn lounge chairs, designed by Olivier Mourgue (born 1939) for Airborne in 1963, are one of those very few quintessential and emblematic early space age designs which - much like the character from the 2001 a Space Odissey movie where they were notoriously featured - evaded space and time to, at first glance, catch the eye and the heart of the beholder, no matter the context nor the timeframe. Rightfully considered as the climax of the 1960s french seat...
