Italian Lounge Chairs with Lacquered Metal and Brass Legs, Italy 1950s
About the Item
The postwar boom years of the 1950s through to the 1960s were one of the periods of the greatest influence of Italian designers. Design in the 50s paved a way to a more aesthetical approach to products as opposed to more utilitarian predecessors, resulting in exceptional pieces like these armchairs.
The idea of freedom expressed so flamboyantly in America was one of the most influential factors on Italians and therefore on design as well. This influence encouraged a more consumer and leisurely attitude towards life. The newly available production techniques and materials like plastic and metal introduced vibrant, colourful effects instead of the traditional wood and fabrics combination used before. As such, these lounge chairs have a sculptural, “free” look dictated by the round shape of the backs and freestanding arms. The seats have similar curvature that creates a welcoming, stylish appearance that preserves the elegance inherent in Italian design. The chairs are supported by sleek lacquered metal legs that stand on brass feet. The black metal and patinated brass legs help to achieve an interesting, yet harmonious contrast with the bodies: the strong curves and proportions of the chairs are perfectly balanced by the thin, sleek look. From all angles, these lounge chairs offer beautiful textures and eye-catching rich colours and forms. To enhance it even further, the bodies are upholstered in a luxurious velour fabric that accentuates the thick seats and pronounced curves.
This pair combines Italian elegance and modern aesthetics resulting in a timeless look which is full of modern energy that will endure for generations. This is also thanks to their exceptional visual quality and uncompromising level of craftsmanship.
