Mid-Century Socialist Lounge Chair

About the Item

A Hungarian Socialist-era conference chair, probably from Budapest. The design is intriguing -a fine example of the Brutalist, East Block style! of the 1960's and 1970's. During that time, furniture designers and artists of all kinds were encouraged to come up with creative designs that would exemplify the vitality and legitimacy of the socialist society. Consequently, many of these piece are quite original in form, eschewing traditional class-based and more hierarchical designs of the past. Some of these original designs are beautiful in their own quirky way and others seem just strange. The wood trim on the arms and on the swivel base is solid walnut; not veneer. The chair has a secret compartment in its left arm rest, possibly for an a microphone connection. Whether it was for electronics or an ashtray, it has been lost to history. The velvet upholstery is original and th swivel mechanism works smoothly. The wooden arms and base have been refinished darker. When purchased, the surface was scuffed and worn.
