Olivier Mourgue Cubique Chairs Airborne France 1968

About the Item

Stunning shaped pair of so called 'Cubique' lounge chairs designed by Olivier Mourgue and manufactured by Airborne, France 1968. These chairs have a solid tubular steel structure which is chrome plated and the seats are upholstered in a very nice grey bouclé upholstery. The chairs have a very playful shape with the chrome frames and cross connections at the back, giving these chairs a very special feel. The organic shaped shell makes them very comfortable to sit in and relax. The chairs are in fantastic condition again, being reupholstered. They are priced and sold in a set of 2 chairs. Olivier Mourgue can be scaled amongst the important French designers of his era, together with Pierre Paulin, Rene Jean Caillette, Pascal Mourgue and many more. Airborne , launched in 1951 by Charles Bernard (1904-1994), Bernard was eager for Airborne to create original works with the new design talent. Airborne’s most innovative collaboration occurred when young designer Olivier Mourgue approached Bernard with his black leather Joker Easy Chair (1959). Bernard immediately liked it and agreed to produce it under his label. It was the beginning of a successful and long relationship that lasted over a decade and contributed to Airborne’s reputation taking of in France and abroad. Mourgue’s undulating Djinn Chair (1965) embodied the futuristic "Space Age" aesthetic of the 1960s and has taken its place in design history thanks to an appearance on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s 1967 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Following three years later, the Cubic chair (1968) was an immediate success. Sadly Airborne International ceased production under Bernard in 1974 and many of the lines, including the Cubique chair, are no longer manufactured. Like all of our upholstered pieces these can also be newly upholstered to your admiration. Ask our experienced upholstery department for an affordable quote for the item you want customized. We only use the best quality fabrics, foam and materials for all of our items. With the reupholstery we will keep the originality in mind so the piece doesn’t lose its value and will be ready for years of use again.
