Rare & Beautiful Sculptural 'DU43' Lounge Chair by Gastone Rinaldi, RIMA, 1953

About the Item

Rare and beautiful sculptural DU43 by architect and designer Gastone Rinaldi (1920-2006) for RIMA(Padova),Italy 1953. Widely regarded as one of Rinaldi's pinnacle masterpieces, the 'DU43' was exhibited at last years 2015 museum exhibition on the designs by RIMA and Rinaldi in particular entitled 'RIMA: ricerca e stile' held in the magnificent rooms of the palace Cigola Fenaroli Valotti in Brescia . Please see image 3. A follow up book written by G & J Drago on Gastone Rinaldi's oeuvre entitled 'Gastone Rinaldi. designer alla RIMA' was published by Capitolum art in 2015. The 'DU43' shares a common sculptural language with other sculptural design masters such as Conti,Forlani and Grassi and Harry Bertoia as well as referencing sculptural luminaries such as Antoine Pevsner. This rare original example has been fully restored while keeping the original rubber shock mounts intact which were still in good vintage condition. Please see image 5 and 6. The steel wire frame has been sandblasted to remove rust accrued over the last 60 years and then re-powder coated in the original matching RAL black enamel . The rare and usually missing cushion has been reconstructed from original vintage archive photos and studying the example exhibited at the RIMA museum exhibition. It is finished in Kvadrat 'Hallingdal 65' fabric by Nana Ditzel which complements the scuptural grid of the main form of the chair. The rear face of the cushion is finished in tough grey canvas which is resistant to the wire structure. Rinaldi's talents as a designer were quickly noted and over the years he directly collaborated with a plethora of italian design icons such as Carlo Mollino,Gio Ponti ( with whom he co designed a couple of chairs for RIMA) ,Alberto Rosselli, Campo & Graffi, Ico Parisi, Ignazio Gardella,Ico Parisi,Marco Zanuso and Ettore Sottsass among others. Gramigna, , Mondadori, 1985, page 76 please see image 10. Biography: Gastone Rinaldi was born in Padua on 16 November 1920. In 1916 his father Mario had established RIMA, a company for the production of metal furniture. Gastone enrolled in the Faculty of Economics, but he was passionate about design and sport (as a footballer, he went as far as playing with Cremona, , and as a racing car driver, he took part in the legendary Thousand Mile 'Mille Miglia' race). In 1948, together with his brother Giorgio, he took over from his father in managing the business. He met Gio Ponti and in 1950 he designed the chairs (DU10 and DU11) for the Hospital Section of the IX Milan Triennial. At the same Triennial, the DU9 chair was also presented. Domus published his creations regularly. In 1952, he attended the XXX Milano Fair in the section curated by Alberto Rosselli, Ettore Sottsass and Marco Zanuso. The armchairs for the Piccolo theatre of Milan followed, with Zanuso. In 1954, he won the Compasso d’Oro for the chair DU30. He participated with Ponti, Parisi, De Carli and Gardella in the American adventure of 'Altamira', one of the first companies across the Atlantic to call on Italian designers. He worked with Carlo Mollino on the chairs for the Molinette Hospital of Turin. In 1957, the armchair DU41 won the silver medal at the XI Triennial. However the internal relations within RIMA became complex and in 1974 Rinaldi established Thema. In 1978, he obtained a nomination for the Compasso d’Oro for the armchair Arianna and in 1981 another for the folding chair Dafne. Thema closed in 1989, Gastone Rinaldi died in Padua on 02 March 2006. . RIMA started as a small artisan company and later on it gained a prominent position among industries that helped define the IDEA of Italian interiors in the postwar era. In the early Fifties, the company was a leading brand. It quickly gained visibility thanks to quality products that were in line with a new aesthetic language. In addition it could count on the support that came from some of the leading names in design. Gio Ponti, Alberto Rosselli, Campo and Graffi, Franco Albini were some of the designers that were in contact with the RIMA studios, and they created some specific models, produced by the company in Padova, through close collaborations.

Wear consistent with age and use. The scuptural form wire frame has been restored, rust proofed and re-powder coated in the original black enamel. The original vintage rubber shock mounts and housing are original and are still in good order. Cushion is reupholstered.
