About the Item

Birch plywood, birch, fabric, brass. Expertly engineered and built. As much a sculpture as a functional chair design. This rare model was exhibited at the X Triennale di Milano, 1954. Wood has been cleaned up and new slip covers and cushions have been made.

    Cobra or Spirale chair designed by Giotto Stoppino in 1975. The spiral and cantilevered chrome structure supports a seat and clip-on back cushion in vibrant fuchsia velvet. The seat has a charming pleated detail around the perimeter. These statement chairs make a great dining, office or meeting chair. Their spiral shape reflects the radical design movement in Italy at the time, involving kinetic art, new materials and construction techniques for a modern world. In good general condition with small signs of age and wear consistent with age. Giotto Stoppino (1926-2011) was an Italian architect and designer, born near Milan in 1926. In 1968 he opened an independent studio and devoted himself mainly to home design, collaborating with some of the major Italian companies including: Acerbis, ArteLuce, Bernini, Calligaris, Driade, Heller New York, La Rinascente, Kartell, Raak Amsterdam, Rexite , Uchida Tokyo, Zanotta.
