Tulip Seating Group in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England

About the Item

This incredible set was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often mis-attributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. All three pieces hover on their original Magnum Orbit chrome casters that function perfectly. The sofa and chairs roll effortlessly and are ideal for carpeted spaces. Restoration / Condition: These G-Plan chairs were found in excellent condition. However, upon inspection we realized that the original support straps had hardened and deteriorated. To allow installation of new webbing, the chairs were completely disassembled and the decking fabric was un-stapled and peeled back. Our upholstery team installed rows of Industrial 3" wide elastic strapping to ensure proper support for decades to come. The original foam cushioning was in excellent condition and allowed to remain. Each rosewood "Tulip" section and piece of chrome hardware was professionally cleaned and polished before reassembly. (2) Chairs: 36.38” Wide x 36” Deep x 30.25” High (17” seat height) (1) Sofa: 82” Wide x 36” Deep x 30.25” High (17” seat height).

We can neither confirm nor deny that these Paul Boulva suspension chairs have seen screen time on Start Trek: The Next Generation, but the teal color resemblance to the Ten Forward chairs is uncanny. The illusiveness of this line makes their discovery all the more exciting when considering the exceptional condition. We’re certain you won’t find a more sublime representation of these chairs and end table anywhere. Clearly inspired by (and often mistaken for) the Etcetera chair by Jan Ekselius. • 1978 Molded Plywood Armchair Set of 2 in Oak by Peter Danko for Thonet
    By Peter Danko, Thonet
    Located in Chattanooga, TN
Chairs listed and sold as a set of (2) It is truly no surprise that this same chair is in the permanent collection at The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Meditate on the genius involved in crafting each chair from a single sheet of layered ply. Cutting and molding a single medium into functional art with a style so timeless, the revival exceeds the debut. Designed by Peter Danko in 1978 and produced by Thonet, all but one chair had their original factory tags underneath. The three tags were gently removed and bagged separately during our restoration. Exquisitely re-upholstered in red-orange weave fabric to harmoniously compliment the honey colored oak frames. Our restoration team spent countless hours touching up the frames. Although a few still remain, most chips and scratches were expertly mitigated before we applied a topcoat to match the original. We're certain these chairs will meet expectations. The chair was gifted to the museum by Lloyd E. Herman, founding director and director emeritus of the Renwick Gallery (1971-1986), in honor of Michael W...
