Art Deco French Modular Airborne Sofa And Armchair Orange Velvet Mid Century Retro
Made between 1947 and 1952 , this rare and interesting sofa set by Airborne Industries in Art Deco style, was made in Southend-on-Sea by Lea Bridge Industries under the “Utility Furniture Scheme”.
The make up of this set is entirely modular, so the armrests/sides and seating units can be taken apart and made up in different configurations, using a simple a nut and bolt fixing.
We have photographed it as three seater sofa and armchair but possible combinations include one long 4 seater or 2 x two seaters including other made up variations.
They were very popular in France due to their French Art Deco Style and were widely distributed by Marcel Gascoin.
Airborne was the trade name of Lea Bridge Industries which were manufacturers of aircraft seating during the Second World War. Post-war the company started making luxury lounge furniture upholstered over a tubular metal frame using the production techniques of aircraft seating.
