About the Item

A good settee in the Louis XVI taste from the third-quarter of the nineteenth century, it exhibits an overall motif typical of the period: light angular acanthus foliage carvings, twisted-rope motifs surrounding both the seating and the seat-back, fluting in the columns flanking the seat-back and stop-fluting in the legs and a brilliant motif in the crest featuring water-leaves on branches bundled together and interwoven with a variety of flowers and foliage. The surface is a wonderful early paint that has worn through to reveal the brilliant red bole layer the cabinetmaker used to prepare the beech wood, this with gilded highlights throughout. Every aspect of this settee was designed carefully to exude clean lines and a delicate sense of balance. And it was built to last the test of time with large tenon-mortised joints locked together in many areas with tiny wooden pins. It will be a very fine seating piece when it has been covered in a new fabric, still young in years and ready to serve for generations to come. Measurements: 40 3/8" H x 77" W x 27" D; 15" H to seat (approx., measured to edge) Condition report: Upholstery in poor condition with significant staining, must be changed; joint separations, though joints remain very stable and sturdy; small losses around the toes of the legs; overall early painted surface with extensive chipping and wear throughout; a very comfortable overall sitting experience, springs in good sturdy shape with strong webbing.
