FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE GILTWOOD ANTIQUE SETTEE France c. 1900 The carved surfaces of this exquisite Louis XVI style settee are remarkable, embellished with an attractive mix of details carved of solid wood offset by gesso decorations under a burnished gilding. The crest rail is a complex display of twisted ribbon backed along the outer edge by twisting rope below the raised central motif of crossed torchieres. The open arm supports are delicately carved with a deep and robust acanthus carving, this furling over at the top in lifelike realism. The back and seat are comfortably upholstered in a cream and blue linen with floral designs, the whole remaining in quite fine condition - other than a few minor blemishes here and there, it is absolutely useable exactly as is, though that certainly depends on your own tastes. The settee rests over turned and tapered legs with stop-fluting inset with small flame carvings over ball feet. It is an absolutely gorgeous settee in a style that has remained highly popular for over three hundred years; being very finely crafted and comfortable, it is certainly a piece you will cherish in your home for a lifetime. Measurements: 38 3/4" H x 59 3/4" W x approximately 26 1/2" D; app. 17" H to seat Condition Report: Upholstery in overall excellent condition with minor spots and discolorations here and there, as pointed to in the close up slideshow pictures. Loss to flower motifs on left side of apron, wear to gilt throughout, loss to rope molding along crest rail, other minor wear and losses.
