Gerrit Rietveld Zig Zag chair by G.A. van de Groenekan, late 1950s

About the Item

The iconic Zig Zag chair, design by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, manufactured by G.A. van de Groenekan, around 1959, Netherlands. A piece very sought after by interior designers as well as ''De Stijl'' collectors and investors. The Zig Zag can be found in most collections of modern art museums worldwide. The New York MoMa has a similar chair in theirs (see the last pictures) Being quite a rare investment piece this iconic Zig Zag will only increase in value with years to come. In 35 years time this will be an antique Rietveld chair with a value much closer to the current price of the ones from the 30s and 40s. The Zig Zag was designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1932. He managed to create this perfectly stable chair which at the time (1930s) must have looked dangerously fragile - a cantilevered seat without any stretchers to support the frame. It had never been done before. Rietveld himself called it ''the little zigzag'' and often referred to it as being an architectural joke. He also called it a ''shot into space'', which may refer to the zigzag shape ending in the line of the backrest straight up into the skies. Or that it is in the shape of a bolt of lightning. Both apply! It's a very elegant and modest piece, quite small but just big enough and it has such a presence and aesthetic quality looked at from any angle. It's a work of art in itself. In case one doesn't want to use it as an actual seat, it's also very stylish and chique when used as a display for a sculpture or a vase. The chair is in good condition, with patina and signs of wear, as can be expected after almost 65 years. The chair has not been restored nor treated with anything. Just cautiously dusted. Provenance: This chair comes from a private collection (passed on from father to son). It was acquired in 1959, most probably purchased at Metz & Co. Metz & Co was a warehouse famous for their avant-garde collection and attracted modernist designers (a.o. Gerrit Rietveld, Marcel Breuer and Hendrik Wouda), and served an artistic, intellectual clientele. The chair has been professionally examined and valued by a certified art - and antiques appraiser. It is guaranteed to be authentic. All provenance details will be provided in a comprehensive written report.

Wear consistent with age and use. There is a small hairline crack visible in the backrest. Easy to restore of course. We chose to refrain from getting that restored - it's known that most proud owners of a Rietveld chair wish to leave the chair exactly in the state it is in.
