Nemo Editions Vintage Pair of Memphis-Movement, Gerrit Rietveld inspired Regal Chairs by Domingo & Scali Alain Domingo & Francois Scali’s Regal Chair is the most famous example of Nemo Editions, France, 1984. Furniture truly meets art with this uncompromising chair-sculpture duo executed during the heady days of Memphis when boundaries between design and art were being challenged and appropriation was gaining ground as a valid alternative to conventional notions of originality and innovation promoted by the 20th century avant-garde. But unlike some of the more difficult-to-place-pieces of this era, Nemo Editions Regal Chair delivers the opportunity to have one’s cake and eat it to what with the unapologetic embrace of postmodernity appropriation coupled with a strict deference to sublime minimalism so cherished by modernists and the current return to midcentury thinking in the wake of post modernism’s fall from favor. Sturdy black enameled metal frame. Hex-head set-screws fasten heavy sheet of solid gray plexiglass. Hard black nylon feet and bushings facilitate normal usage and structural integrity. Retains period paper label to underside of seat “NEMO 1985,” see image. Background Information: One of the 80’s pioneers of the revival of global design. “Nemo (Alain Domingo and François Scali) was an agency shared with Alain Domingo Creation responsible for many iconic pieces, like the pair of chairs "Moreno & Marini," the chair "Faizzz", or the stool "in Tape Two ". François Scali was a finalist in the Concours International Architecture for the Triangle of Insanity Defense. Major works include the Pavillon de l'Automobile de la Cité des Sciences de la Villette (2000), Palace Sports and Entertainment City of Beauvais (Oise), the Building Maharishi - MHB Limited, London (2004 ). In 2008, he designed for the city of Shanghai a building shaped like a giant dog. The building was to be built for the World Expo in 2010. Due to financial problems linked to the crisis, the proposed "dog house" was shelved but did not prevent Nemo from obtaining a good deal of press and help establish their project as one of the most curious building proposals of the new millennium. In addition to his work as an architect, Francois Scali has also designed several projects breaking down the boundary between design and art. The "Genitron", for example, was a futuristic clock counting down the seconds before the year 2000. Located at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, it was inaugurated in 1987 by the President of the Republic of the time, Francois Mitterrand. The Placa de les Glories Barcelona hosted his monument, "The Meridia" commemorating the bicentenary of the invention of the metric system. In 1997,Scali was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the Minister of Culture Jack Lang. As of 2010, Francois Scali continued to run his architecture firm.
