Pair of British Country Squire's George II Side Chairs

About the Item

Presenting an absolutely gorgeous pair of British Country Squire’s George II Side Chairs. When we say that we ‘LOVE’ our antiques to be of quality, old, full of character and original these are what we are talking about ! Not a matching pair, but both English from circa 1750-60, the one on the left is elm and the one on the right is oak. Both from the same Dallas Collection, bought together in England and have been together for (at a minimum) decades ! Both inspired by the work of Thomas Chippendale and contemporaneous to Chippendale’s works. These are “provincial’ pieces rather than the high-end more elaborate Chippendale Chairs being made for the titled aristocracy in the major cities. These would have adorned the hallway/living area of a County Squire’s Mansion in the countryside. Both made using wooden pins and dowels. Entirely hand crafted and carved. It is the solid back splats that are Chippendale in style, but the rest of the chairs are what one would expect to be made for Rural utilitarian use in 1750-60. The natural patina is simply gorgeous and despite the few minor repairs and cracks/nicks over the centuries they are mainly untouched and should remain that way ! Provenance: From a Dallas Private Collection. Condition: Good original condition. One repair to back splat and one historic repair to front right of seat of elm chair. One crack to seat of oak chair. The rest are natural wear and tear as are evident from pics. Dimensions: Elm chair (on left) is 38 inches tall, 20.5 inches wide and 20 inches deep. seat height is 17 inches. Oak chair (on right) is 37 inches tall, 19 inches wide and 19 inches deep. seat height is 18 inches.

  • 19th Century Irish Country Squires Mahogany Hunt Table
    Located in Dallas, TX
Presenting a gorgeous 19th century Irish country squires mahogany Hunt table. This table was made in the late 19th century circa 1880, and is made of solid mahogany and sits on 8 legs with padded hoof feet. 2 drop leafs on either side supported by swinging gate legs on either side when upwards. Beautiful interlocking detail to the side leafs and central section. Oval in shape …. it would comfortably seat 8 people. Made in Ireland. This is a ‘Hunt’ table and not to be confused with an Irish ‘Wake’ table. Whilst ‘Hunt Tables’ and ‘Wake Tables’ are similar in shape and design their original purposes could not be more different. Wake Tables were made and used by indigenous Irish people for 2 purposes: (1) As a full functional dining table and (2) the central section had to be of sufficient width and length to support a coffin for the purpose of ‘waking’ the deceased in their home. Wake Tables were almost always made of oak, as this was the most common wood found in Ireland and therefore available to the ordinary (and poor) Irish Folk. Sometimes they might also be made of elm or sycamore. Hunt Tables. however, we not made for the purposes of holding a coffin or ‘waking’ the dead. They were made for the ruling classes, nobility or gentry for the sole purpose of use on the day of the ‘hunt’. This would be the fox hunting season of Fall and Winter, where the participants in the ‘hunt’ would gather at the local manor house early in the morning and the snacks and refreshments would be displayed for eating and drinking on the ‘hunt’ table. Hunt Tables are almost always made of mahogany which was an expensive and exotic hardwood imported from Cuba and the West Indies. When not in use they would be put up against a wall with the leafs down and items would be displayed on top. This table is obviously a ‘hunt’ table because: (1) It is made of mahogany (2) the central section is not wide enough to safely hold at coffin at rest. We are of the firm opinion that this is in fact an Irish-made Hunt Table due top the legs and padded hoof feet which more closely resemble the feet one would find on an Irish Wake Table...

  • 18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on Later Chest Stand
    Located in Dallas, TX
PRESENTING A GORGEOUS and beautifully proportioned Mid-18th Century George II Miniature Campaign Bureau Chest on later Chest/Stand. Mid-18th century, made in Britain, circa 1760-1770. The bureau chest sits on a later stand/chest, that we estimate is late 19th century, circa 1860-1880. It is also British. We believe that the primary wood in this piece is either Elm or Sycamore with mahogany elements. Classic Campaign style miniature Bureau Chest, with its ORIGINAL George II brass hardware, including handles on the sides for easy carriage, which is what proves to us, that this chest was made for campaign purposes. The brasses are GORGEOUS and are classically George II in style, design and construction. The quality, thickness and patina to the brasses, is what ‘initially’ tells us, that this is a ‘period’ piece and not a reproduction. Likewise, the dovetailing detail to the drawers, tells us that this was a hand crafted piece and certainly NOT machine made. The secondary woods appear to be a combination of oak and pine, exactly as one would expect. The central keyhole escutcheons are FANTASTIC and are in the form of a pair of opposing ‘lyres’. We have never seen anything like them! Beautiful natural patina! The ‘brasses’ look like they have been polished a ‘little too often and vigorously’, over the piece’s 250+ years history … BUT … the bonus of this cleaning is the creation of a rather appealing, '2 Tone effect’, on the patina of the wood around the brasses. The Bureau has a flat gallery...
