Past forges Future Chair2/ Functional Art by Markus Friedrich Staab 2022

About the Item

Sculpural design chair. Traditional bavarian kitchen chair contemporized, additional sculpural leg added, re-shaped, painted and multi-lacquered by Markus Friedrich Staab. You can use this chair on a dailly basis or you can see it as a sculpture. Through my work I transform each chair into a unique and individual object. Chairs that once were mass-produced and homogenous, become singular and unique: re-cycled, re-furbished, re-mixed and re-decorated. I am particularly interested to give value and meaning to something that has been overlooked. To free the object from its traditional use and turn it into something special. Through this process the chair that was once used on a daily basis, becomes a self-sufficient piece of art. Hereby we explore traditional historical objects that gain value by a mere change of perspective. It is these themes of chairs as sculptural objects and art as object of utility that I am particularly fascinated by. It is the love for the daily things that we surround ourselves with, their unique shape and expression, that give me hope that not all is lost to pure consumerism and IKEAlisation

  • "Sach" Wood Sculpture Side Chair by Vit Cimbura for Atika, No. 14/1, Czech, 1988
    By Vit Cimbura
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
Super rare piece of furniture art by Czechian Architect Vit Cimbura made in 1988. Our example called "Sach" is number 14/1, which suggests there are 14 examples. We think however it is the only one made, since the Art movement "Atika" Vit was part of, only made unique and one of a kind objects. This piece of impressive furniture maybe shouldn't be called a dining or side chair. This is more than a chair and the word chair would be to simplistic to describe an object like this. In our opinion this should be called a sculpture or a piece of art with the looks of a chair. This isn't something you will simply place at your dining table, but something you will place at a prominent spot in your room, so people can behold its fascinating shapes and design. Just like a piece of art should be treated. The piece is fully made by hand by one of Chechs most famous architects: Vit Cimbura, in 1988. It consists of solid Maple wood with a leather seating. The wood is carved and colored or stained in black and green. The yellow color is the original color of the Maple. It gained some traces of use to wood and leather seating over the time, but since its appearance is quite massive it doesn't harm its looks. Chair is original and has the artist his signature. In 1987 a group of Czech architects consisting of Vít Cimbura (1950), Bohuslav Horák...
