Bleached Renaissance Style Walnut Sgabello Chair from Italy, Circa 1870

A sgabello is an Italian chair that originated in the Renaissance. Originally designed to be displayed in a hallway (like a French side chair), sgabello were typically highly carved with some sort of familial crest or coat of arms incorporated into the décor. They were purely decorative, as the backrests were elaborately carved with protuberances and bulging motifs; comfort was not a primary concern.
Hand-carved from walnut in Italy, circa 1870, our Renaissance style sgabello has recently been bleached, allowing the carvings to gain further prominence. The shaped seat has quarter round molding adorned with a series of niches that have been filled with trefoil leaves. Additional foliage has been shallowly incised to the top of the seat, with sprawling rinceaux surrounding a potted plant.

19th Century French Napoleon III Period Rosewood salon chair is an elegant example of Fine French craftsmanship using exotic imported wood from the Americas. Sometimes called Kingwood, rosewood is known for its natural beauty, color, hardness, and ability to last for eons. This example combines elements of the Louis Philippe form with accents from the Louis XVI style, with a graceful shield-shaped seatback carved with flowing ribbon at the top of the arched crown. The remainder of the seatback follows tailored lines accented with scrolls for a tailored opulence. Mid Victorian Side Chair Finely Hand Carved with Wool Work Seat, Circa 1850

This is a very good quality example of an English occasional side chair in the Rococo style, from the mid Victorian period, circa 1850, made from Beech.
The back is a Classic balloon back shape, but with intricate cut-out and carved detail to the frame and particularly to the cross splat. This carved detail is continued on the front legs and front stretcher. The foot of the legs are splayed slightly outwards which adds to the features of this chair. Twin side stretchers give additional strength to this chair but overall this is a delicately made chair.
It has a good wool-work covered seat with a rose spray design.

This chair is not a strong dining room chair and is not recommended for regular use as a chair to sit on. The chair is light and would make a very pretty bedroom or hall side chair, to be used principally for display either on its own or with say teddy bears displayed on it, or for draping light...
