Roland Rainer, Set of Eight Stacking Chairs P7, Bicolored Beech, Austria, 1952

About the Item

A set of eight stacking chairs designed by Professor Roland Rainer (1910-2004) in 1952 and manufactured by Emil & Alfred Pollak, Vienna. Roland Rainer used these chairs for the Viennese city hall "Wiener Stadthalle" in 1956-1962. They are made of natural and dark brown (almost black) stained solid beech and the seats and backs are made of plywood. The condition is very good with little patina and few signs of wear. Documented in: Roland Rainer das Werk des Architekten 1927-2003 Möbeldesign der 50er Jahre, Eva B. Ottilinger, p. 133, Böhlau Verlag Hofmobilien Depot - Möbel Museum Wien MD 68.119. About Roland Rainer: Roland Rainer (1910-2004) was an Austrian architect and professor. He was teaching at several European Universities and he was one of the most important architects in Austria. In June 1952, the Viennese municipal council decided to build a large, multifunctional event hall 'Wiener Stadthalle' (Vienna city hall) and in October an architectural competition was announced. It was attended by 16 international planners and planning communities. Roland Rainer won the competition before Alvar Aalto (Finland). The 'Wiener Stadthalle' was one of his most significant works and was built from 1956-1962. The chairs for the city hall are very well-known and sought-after design objects. Roland Rainer also designed lounge chairs for the Viennese coffee house "Cafe Ritter". These chairs also were used by Austrian architect Oswald Haerdtl for the "Cafe Prückel" in Vienna.
